| Hauser Estate Winery Opens for Business
In late July, from atop a hill in the middle of the orchards of Adams County, a new winery opened their doors. Inside, three generations have joined forces to serve you a selection of wine and hard cider from their glass enclosed tasting room with one of the most scenic views in all the county. Hauser Estate Winery will leave you breathless.
The view from the tasting room, or the patio that provides outdoor seating to enjoy a bottle or glass of wine, includes Ski Liberty, Gettysburg, and miles of orchards. Be sure to visit and enjoy a tasting. On your way home, stop at the Historic Round Barn just down the road for local fruits and veggies to go with your wine. If you are making your own wine trail, be sure to visit the Adams County Winery, just a short drive from our newest vintner. |

History Happens -
Cyclorama Painting Reopens September 26
On September 26, the new Museum & Visitor Center for the Gettysburg National Military Park will celebrate their grand opening with the unveiling of the largest and one of the most important historical artifacts at Gettysburg - the Paul Philippoteaux Cyclorama Painting "The Battle of Gettysburg."
The Gettysburg Foundation has spent the last several years conserving the painting, to return it as closely as possible to its original state. Recreation of the three-dimensional diorama and its lost optical illusions will allow viewers to once again lose themselves in the battle scene. The audio system will recreate the battle sounds, heightening the sense of being in the midst of Pickett's Charge.
Be part of the history September 26-28 during the Grand Opening Celebrations. | |
| Living History Lessons
One of the largest, and most highly attended, events each year is the annual reenactment. Most often our accommodations will sell out, and visitors will book for the following year as they check out. But those who are unable to attend should not be disappointed. Each weekend April through October Gettysburg hosts several Living History Encampments.
What is a Living History Encampment? It is interactive history. It is both military and civilian, and exposes visitors to a wide range of experiences. Often time the encampments on the National Park will include firing demonstrations by the visiting regiment. At the American Civil War Museum, visitors will discover civilian reenactors providing a look back at life during the Civil War - how they cooked, what the children did, and even how they passed their time. Several times throughout the season General Lee's Headquarters will host "Voices of the Confederacy", providing a chance to learn about the Southern soldier and civilian. Visitors will also find a living history element to the U.S. Christian Commission Period Chapel Services.
Each of these opportunities creates an experience. This experience has been known to convert a few people to avid history lovers - so be warned. We welcome you to immerse yourself in history as it comes alive in Gettysburg. |
Beyond the Battlefield
Gettysburg is more than the Gettysburg National Military Park and three unforgettable days in history. For the millions who visit each year, many of whom come back many times, it is quite clear that the battlefields are just the beginning. Our Civil War history expands into the town, and beyond into our neighboring towns. And for others who have discovered that we also offer great antiquing, they return often and make short trips to New Oxford, East Berlin, Fairfield and Littlestown for their own personal treasure hunts. You will also find many groups that just come to march the courses - some of the best golf is just beyond the battlefield. If you just want to relax, no problem. Grab your motorcycle or jump in the car and take a Sunday drive any day of the week through Adams County. Our beautiful countryside, filled with rolling hills, orchards, and fabulous farm markets will slow you down and remind you why we call it "America the Beautiful". |
